Ubisoft Closes Winnipeg Studio, Highlighting Ongoing Challenges in Canada’s Gaming Industry

Video game developer Ubisoft has closed its Winnipeg studio, resulting in the loss of approximately 65 jobs. The studio, which opened in 2019, was part of the company's Canadian expansion strategy and had previously announced plans to grow to 300 employees by 2030. The closure follows Ubisoft's January shutdown of its Halifax studio, where 71 employees were laid off.

According to company representatives, the decision is part of Ubisoft's broader global restructuring efforts, which have included studio closures and workforce reductions in multiple countries. Manitoba officials have described the closure as concerning and are offering affected workers employment support and training opportunities.

The news highlights ongoing challenges in Canada's technology and gaming sectors. While demand for skilled software developers remains strong in areas such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, cloud computing, and enterprise software, the video game industry has experienced significant layoffs over the past two years as companies adjust to slower growth and rising development costs. For affected employees, many of their technical skills are transferable to other growing segments of Canada's digital economy, helping improve their prospects in a competitive but evolving job market.
