TVDSB Cuts 31 Education Positions Amid Declining Enrolment and Funding Changes

The Thames Valley District School Board (TVDSB) is eliminating 31 positions, including designated early childhood educators (DECEs) and workers who support newcomer children, citing declining kindergarten enrolment and reduced federal funding for newcomer language programs. The affected employees will be laid off at the end of June.

According to the board, kindergarten enrolment is expected to fall by nearly 300 students for the 2026–27 school year, while federal funding reductions tied to lower immigration levels have affected programs that support newcomer families. Union representatives argue the cuts will increase pressure on teachers, raise student-to-staff ratios, and reduce support for young learners and students with additional needs.

The layoffs highlight a broader trend in Canada's public sector labour market, where education employers are facing budget constraints, demographic shifts, and changing government funding priorities. While demand remains strong for teachers, educational assistants, and childcare professionals across many regions, school boards are increasingly adjusting staffing levels to match enrolment trends. The situation also reflects how slower population growth and reduced immigration targets can influence employment opportunities in education and settlement services.
