The affected employees will be laid off at the end of June.

According to the board, kindergarten enrolment is expected to fall by nearly 300 students for the 2026–27 school year, while federal funding reductions tied to lower immigration levels have affected programs that support newcomer families. Union representatives argue the cuts will increase pressure on teachers, raise student-to-staff ratios, and reduce support for young learners and students with additional needs.

The layoffs highlight a broader trend in Canada's public sector labour market, where education employers are facing budget constraints, demographic shifts, and changing government funding priorities.
