Corus Cuts 43 Jobs as Canada's Media Industry Faces Ongoing Challenges

Corus Entertainment, the parent company of Global Television and several radio stations, is cutting 43 jobs across Canada as it restructures operations to address declining advertising revenue and rising debt. The majority of the layoffs are in Alberta, with additional positions eliminated in British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Ontario, and the Maritimes. While Corus says it will continue producing local news and create some new roles, the changes have raised concerns about the future of regional journalism.

The layoffs come as Corus undergoes a major financial restructuring, including a proposed debt-for-equity deal designed to reduce its debt burden. The company has cited ongoing pressure on traditional television and radio advertising as media consumption shifts toward digital platforms.

Corus joins other major Canadian media companies, including Bell and Rogers, in reducing staff over the past year. These cuts reflect broader challenges in Canada's media industry, where declining advertising revenue, digital disruption, and cost-cutting measures are reshaping employment opportunities. While hiring remains strong in sectors such as healthcare, skilled trades, and technology, traditional media continues to face significant workforce reductions.
