Where To Go Apple Picking in Canada
If you’d like to pick your own apples right off the tree, then visiting a pick-your-own apple orchard is the way to go. Apple picking can be fun for the whole family during the fall season and a way to make the most of the falling outdoor temperatures. Some farms and orchards also offer wagon rides, petting zoos, corn mazes, haunted houses and more, plus country stores where you can score sweet treats like pies and cider.
You may have missed visiting the farms this year but here is a list of must-see Apple Picking & Fall Farms across Canada.
Alberta
Prairie Gardens and Adventure Farm is a working 35-acre farm about 25 km north of Edmonton. Their Haunted Pumpkin U-Pick Harvest Festival has been an annual tradition for the past 27 years, and includes a Pumpkin Cannon (really!), a ghost town with Ghost Walks to the Elm Street Cemetery, and a Haunted Farm House.Happy Acres U-Pick - This pick-your-own produce, free-range farm located 30 minutes west of Edmonton boasts chemical-free fruits and veggies and a wide variety of activities for kids and adults. Come for the produce and stay for the farm animals, ice cream, and muffins!
British Columbia
Willow View Farms has been around for almost 30 years! This classic apple picking spot is in Abbotsford and is open seven days a week, offering Honeycrisp, Gala, Elstar, Fuji, Ambrosia, and more, plus a country store with tasty treats. Bella Rosa Orchards is a family farm just outside of Kelowna that has been in business for over 40 years. This Okanagan Valley orchard grows all the main varieties of apples, four varieties of pears, and grapes. Stop by the fruit stand for some produce, buy some gelato, or call ahead to book a time to pick your own apples.
Manitoba
There are several reasons why CAA has given Stonewall’s Boonstra Farms the “best farm in Manitoba” award, including berry picking, a petting zoo with kittens and baby rabbits, a playground, wagon rides, fresh air, and a fall-season corn maze.
New Brunswick
Located among the lush hills that stretch along the Petitcodiac River Valley in New Brunswick, the Verger Belliveau Orchard in Memramcook invites visitors to sample some cider or wine, have a snack in the orchard cafe or pick your own apples during the harvest season.
A scenic family farm operating since 1783, Bostwick’s U-Pick Apples sits on the gorgeous Saint John River approximately one hour’s drive (and a ferry ride) away from Saint John. Visitors can pick a variety of apples, as well as fall produce such as pumpkins, squash, gourds, and more.
Newfoundland and Labrador
The Campbellton Berry Farm was started in 1979 by Philip, Rhonda, and Peter Thornley. The Haunted Corn Field is open on weekends (weather permitting) while the Farm Market (featuring pumpkins) and Petting Farm are open every day.
Nova Scotia
Located in the heart of Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley, Noggin’s Corner Farm is a family favourite for apple picking. With an enormous (and enormously challenging!) corn maze, food trucks, popular Barnyard Adventure area with several playgrounds, and an annual haunted house, there’s something for everyone here.Another Annapolis Valley orchard just an hour outside of Halifax, Boates Farm is a great choice for families interested in picking their own organic apples – varieties include Gravenstein, McIntosh, Cortland, Honeycrisp, Gala & Russet – and pears, or looking to sample fall favourites like sweet apple cider and apple pies.
Ontario
Chudleigh’s Farm in Halton Hills was first opened to the public in 1967. Featuring 50,000 trees with a wide variety of apples to pick, there are plenty of other things to do at the farm for the whole family, plus tasty eats and drinks.Downey's Strawberry & Apple Farm in Caledon is a third generation family farm with an orchard that offers visitors their pick of strawberries, raspberries, and apples, depending on the season. Featuring wagon rides, apple cider, candy apples, and more, admission to Downey’s is free as long as you pick $20 worth of apples.Applewood Farm in Stouffville was one of the first pick-your-own apple farms in Ontario. A wagon ride will transport you around this massive apple orchard (which includes 32 acres of apples and five acres of strawberries). Fall activities at Applewood include pumpkin picking and a corn maze, and more!
Prince Edward Island
With over 32 acres of apples, plus local pears and plums pushing them over 50 acres, Arlington Orchards are PEI's largest orchard. With over 27 different apple varieties, there's a favourite apple for everyone!The Grove Orchard & U-Pick is a family-owned farm located five minutes outside of Charlottetown that specializes in apples, pears, and chums – delicious cherry-plum hybrids. This relatively new orchard opened in 2013 and has grown to include over 14,000 trees, so there’s plenty of fruit available to pick.
Quebec
Nestled in the heart of the Monteregie, Cidrerie-Verger Leo Boutin is known for its orchard and its delicious cider factory. Families can also partake in picnics, wagon rides, cider tasting and apple crepes.La Magie de la Pomme (The Magic of the Apple) is a sustainable orchard and event venue located in Saint-Eustache just outside Montreal. A visit to this orchard can also include pumpkin and squash picking, sampling the maple syrup produced from the local maple grove, and an eight-course gourmet meal at the on-site restaurant – Le Bistro la Dent Sucrée (The Sweet Tooth Bistro)!
Saskatchewan
Petrofka Orchard is a great place to spend the day with the family with over 1.5 km of beautiful trails, a riverfront beach and a charming country store where you can purchase apples, plums, sour cherries, and other local seasonal fruits and vegetables.The Canadian Prairies are berry-picking country, so while you will often find apples available to pick at Home Quarter Berry U-Pick, east of Saskatoon, they specialize in locally grown berries (raspberries, strawberries, and saskatoons) and delicious preserves like jams and jellies. The farm is also home to horses, sheep, and llamas and a large pumpkin patch for seasonal picking.
