Raising Awareness Has a Positive Impact for Those with Chronic Illnesses

The news of Gord Downie’s terminal brain cancer diagnosis, a chronic illness, last May left many fans shocked and saddened. His decision to do one final tour across the country, however, and the subsequent donations to cancer research it has encouraged, is an uplifting part of what will likely become an enduring piece of Canadian lore.

During the Tragically Hip’s farewell concert last August, Gord Downie’s unmistakable voice was heard coast to coast. The concert was broadcast into the homes of millions of Canadians, and thousands more flocked to Kingston to witness the legendary and prolific musician’s last-ever performance.

Chronic Illness: Raising Awareness

According to a recent article in The Globe and Mail, Downie’s oncologist Dr. James Perry has been astounded by the singer’s bravery. Dr. Perry accompanied Downie on the tour to provide medical care if the singer’s illness worsened.

The outlook for patients diagnosed with glioblastomas, which affects four to six in every 100,000 Canadians, is grim. Despite this, Downie and the band gave it their all on tour. And this is uplifting news for fans and those suffering with the disease.

For cancer patients who are seeking long and short-term disability while they recover and manage their symptoms, Gord Downie’s experience has had a positive impact. We’ve discussed in previous blog posts about how valuable it is for celebrities to go public about their illness, and bring a much-needed spotlight to chronic and serious diseases and disabilities. In Gord Downie’s case, he has helped raise well over $250,000 for brain cancer research.
