Oracle Plans Massive Layoffs as AI Data Center Spending Surges, Reflecting Shifts in the Global—and Canadian—Tech Job Market

Oracle, the $400-billion U.S. enterprise software and cloud company, is reportedly planning major layoffs as it pours billions into building AI data-center infrastructure. The company could cut 20,000–30,000 jobs—about 12–18% of its global workforce of 162,000—possibly starting in March 2026, according to reports from Bloomberg and CIO.

The layoffs are tied to Oracle’s aggressive push to become a leading AI cloud provider competing with Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure. Building massive AI data centers requires enormous capital, and Oracle’s spending has surged. Its capital expenditures jumped from $6.9 billion in 2024 to more than $21 billion in 2025, with projections of $50 billion this fiscal year, pushing free cash flow into negative territory. Investors and lenders have expressed concerns about the company’s growing debt, which has climbed above $100 billion as it finances infrastructure for major AI clients such as OpenAI.

To offset the financial strain, Oracle may reduce roles it believes will be replaced or reshaped by AI, potentially saving $8–10 billion.

For Canada, the news reflects a broader tech-sector trend: companies are investing heavily in AI infrastructure while cutting or restructuring traditional tech roles. While layoffs may ripple through multinational firms with Canadian employees, the shift also signals rising demand in Canada for AI engineering, data-center operations, and cloud infrastructure talent, particularly in tech hubs like Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver.
