Global News has cut 45 positions across Canada, including 22 in British Columbia, 23 in Alberta, and one in the eastern division. According to Unifor, the union representing employees at parent company Corus Entertainment, 26 of those affected are journalists. Union president Lana Payne called the move “a devastating blow to local news and to our democracy,” pledging support for members navigating the cuts.
Among those laid off was award-winning B.C. journalist Simon Little, who said the newsroom had been “dismantled” and urged the public to recognize the pressures facing local reporters. Corus confirmed the layoffs, framing them as part of an efficiency review aimed at adopting new technology and workflows.
These cuts add to a series of reductions at Corus in 2024, including more than 100 positions eliminated and the closure of a long-running Hamilton radio station. The repeated losses highlight broader instability in Canada’s media industry, where declining ad revenues and digital disruption continue to reshape employment. While Canada’s overall labour market remains relatively strong, journalism jobs are becoming increasingly precarious, raising concerns about the future of local news coverage.
