When we talk to members of the Share Lawyers community, we learn so much. It is important that we stop and listen to Canadians who have been given a critical or long term illness diagnosis. It has been part of our mission for over 35 years to not only give the best client service, but also to treat each and every client with integrity and care.

Do your best to listen to the doctors
“I was anxious about my diagnosis, my fears were that it would just get worse and never improve. I was sick all the time and so stressed out. I saw my Dr. regularly and did my best to do what I was told, to take care of myself.”
Accepting a diagnosis and the fact that you may not be able to work any longer is hard
“I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder in March 2010. Initially, I was very skeptical and disagreed. I was held in hospital on a Form 3 I think until the date of my trial to dispute my diagnosis. I felt a lot of stress and also felt that the hospital staff conspired to ensure that my trial would work in their favour. Deep rooted I am paranoid and this can come out mostly when I am not eating well, sleep deprived or after a drink. I did not want to take medicine but after the trial agreed with my diagnosis I had to take the medicine to leave the hospital. Once I took the medication, I also stopped drinking and controlled my diet to eat healthily. My attendance at work was affected and I took an extended sick leave. I was raised in a family where both my parents worked very hard so not working for me was never an option. Being on disability initially was very hard and I felt guilty not working.”
The best thing about getting a diagnosis is finding solutions to help the pain
“My diagnosis was Degenerative Disc Disease. It is something that I have to deal with 24/7. Some days are easier than others. The first thing that my Dr. said was to start physio right away to learn ways to help ease the pain.”
