Freight Industry Layoffs Hit Over 7,100 Workers in U.S. & Canada Amid Economic Struggles

Between October 2024 and January 2025, over 7,100 workers in the freight industry across the U.S. and Canada faced layoffs, reflecting significant challenges in the sector. Companies such as Amazon, Fila, Kohl's, Del Monte Foods, Lytx, and Lineage Logistics were among those implementing workforce reductions.

In Canada, the situation is particularly concerning. The Canadian Trucking Alliance reported that more than three-quarters of trucking companies had laid off employees, primarily truck drivers, since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.Additionally, the family-owned McKevitt Trucking, operating for 76 years, ceased operations, resulting in the loss of 81 driver positions.

These developments have significant implications for the Canadian job market, especially in sectors reliant on freight and logistics. The reduction in workforce not only affects the livelihoods of those directly employed but also poses challenges for industries dependent on efficient supply chains. As the freight industry grapples with these issues, there is a pressing need for strategic interventions to stabilize employment and ensure the resilience of Canada's transportation infrastructure.
