Fanshawe College to Cut 35% of Workforce Amid Budget Crisis

Fanshawe College in London, Ontario is moving ahead with plans to reduce nearly 400 positions—amounting to 35% of its workforce—as it struggles to address a projected $38.6 million budget shortfall for 2025/26. In an email to staff, President Peter Devlin confirmed the layoffs, noting that some of the reductions will come through early retirements and unfilled vacancies.

The cuts follow a town hall announcement made earlier this year and have been shared with faculty and support staff unions.

A key factor behind the budget crisis is the federal government’s cap on international student permits, which has significantly impacted the school’s revenue. International tuition has long been a major funding source for Canadian colleges and universities, especially amid stagnant provincial funding.

This move reflects broader trends in Canada’s post-secondary sector, where institutions are increasingly vulnerable to shifts in immigration policy and financial pressures. As schools adapt, more layoffs and restructuring could follow, affecting thousands of education workers across the country.
