ConocoPhillips to Cut Canadian Jobs as Energy Sector Restructuring Hits Alberta Workforce

ConocoPhillips plans to begin layoffs across its Canadian operations in early November, according to an internal memo obtained by Reuters. Employees in Calgary will receive virtual notifications on November 5, while staff at the Surmont and Montney sites will be informed in person the following day. The U.S.-based energy company currently employs about 950 people in Canada, though it has not disclosed how many positions will be affected.

The cuts come at a time when the Canadian labour market is showing signs of cooling, particularly in energy and natural resources — sectors that have traditionally offered high-paying, stable employment in Western Canada. While oil prices remain relatively strong, companies continue to streamline operations and adopt automation, resulting in fewer on-site roles. Alberta, already facing slower job growth compared with the national average, could feel the impact most acutely as layoffs ripple through local service and supply industries.

These reductions also reflect a broader trend of restructuring across multinational energy companies operating in Canada, underscoring the ongoing volatility for workers in an industry adjusting to shifting global demand and long-term decarbonization pressures.
