Canada Post has begun cutting an undisclosed number of management positions as part of a government-directed restructuring plan aimed at addressing massive financial losses and modernizing operations. The postal service, which reported over $1 billion in losses last year and says it is losing $10 million per day, said the layoffs are meant to “align” leadership with future needs and create a more sustainable business model.
The move follows Ottawa’s directive that Canada Post transition from door-to-door delivery to community mailboxes, close select post offices, and relax letter mail delivery standards — reforms expected to save hundreds of millions annually. However, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) and the Canadian Postmasters and Assistants Association warn the changes could “gut” the public postal system, eliminate thousands of unionized jobs, and harm rural and small-town communities.
The restructuring reflects a broader trend in the Canadian job market, where large public and private employers are cutting or reorganizing staff to adapt to digital disruption, slowing demand, and financial pressures. Canada Post and CUPW are scheduled to resume labour negotiations this week amid ongoing strikes and calls for public consultation on the postal service’s future.
