Bell Media has laid off 60 employees as part of an ongoing transformation of its digital media operations, the company confirmed. According to Bell Media spokesperson Sara McLaren, the cuts did not affect newsgathering or reporting roles and were largely concentrated in corporate departments, continuing restructuring efforts that began in November. At that time, parent company BCE Inc. eliminated 650 management positions across Bell and about 40 roles at Bell Media.
However, Unifor, the union representing some of the affected workers, said 20 of its members lost their jobs, including 11 journalists in Toronto, North Bay, Halifax and Calgary. Traffic co-ordinators, schedulers and promotional staff were also impacted. Unifor national president Lana Payne argued that expanding federal journalist tax credits to include broadcasters might have helped prevent the layoffs.
The cuts reflect broader pressures in Canada’s media sector, where traditional broadcasters face declining advertising revenues, digital disruption and cost-cutting measures. The restructuring highlights ongoing instability in parts of the Canadian job market, particularly in media and communications, even as other sectors continue to face labour shortages.
