What Causes Mobility Issues?
When we first meet our clients, we talk to them at length about their story. Often times, when people first walk through our doors they are scared and can feel hopeless. There are many causes of mobility issues that bring clients to us. Our mission is to let our clients know they are supported - and we want to understand the journey that has brought them to us.
Mobility issues are a key cause of long term disability benefit applications. We have compiled a list of conditions that can cause mobility issues, with a focus on those which result in an individual’s inability to continue to work.
Causes of Mobility Issues
Amputation
Amputation is the removal of a limb by trauma, medical illness, or surgery. In Canada the majority of amputations are performed because of diabetic complications (81%), cardiovascular disease (6%), or cancer (3%).
Arthritis
The term arthritis is used to describe over 200 conditions affecting joints, tissues that surround joints, and other connective tissues in the body. Some forms of arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus (SLE), can affect multiple organs and cause widespread symptoms.
Back Disorders
Degenerative Disk Disease, Scoliosis, and Herniated Discs are all conditions affecting the lower to upper back which can cause pain, restricted movement, and in some extreme cases of scoliosis, breathing and respiratory issues.
Cerebral Palsy
Cerebral Palsy (CP) is caused by brain damage early on in life. It’s a disorder that affects muscle tone, movement, and motor skills. Many individuals with CP can move and work; however, the symptoms of CP tend to intensify with age.
Neuromuscular Disorders
Muscular Dystrophy, Multiple Sclerosis, and Ataxia, are Neuromuscular Disorders that result in degeneration and atrophy of muscle or nerve tissues. Coordination, movement, pain, and balance issues can be experienced by those suffering from various kinds of neuromuscular disorders.
Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia is a form of "soft tissue" or muscular rheumatism causing constant pain in muscles and ligaments. Inactivity, depression, anxiety, chronic fatigue, and sleep loss are common symptoms.
Because of the broad nature of mobility disabilities, we meet clients who have been denied LTD benefits because the insurance company believes their individual case does not fall under a specific disability. Share Lawyers works for our clients to make the case for their right to heal with the benefits that they deserve.
