Torn Banner Studios Announces Layoffs

Torn Banner Studios, the Toronto-based developer renowned for "Chivalry: Medieval Warfare," has announced staff layoffs as part of a company restructuring. CEO and Creative Director Steve Piggott confirmed the decision, emphasizing the studio's commitment to assisting affected employees by providing severance packages, allowing them to retain their work computers, and aiding in job placement at other studios.

This development reflects broader challenges within Canada's video game industry, which, despite contributing $5.5 billion to the national GDP in 2021—a 23% increase since 2019—has experienced similar workforce reductions. For instance, Ubisoft Toronto laid off 33 employees in a "targeted realignment" earlier this year.

The Canadian video game sector remains a significant economic contributor, employing tens of thousands nationwide. However, studios must navigate market dynamics and operational challenges to maintain sustainability and growth.
