Sugar, Spice, and Everything Nice

It seems like a lot of the fun things in life are things you should avoid. And while it’s also true that small portions of “unhealthy” foods are just as important as the healthy ones, it can be tempting to reach for some sugar, especially as we start to get closer to Halloween. We’ve compiled a few things that you can reach for instead of candy if you are having a sugar craving.

Fruit

While the last thing we think about grabbing when we crave some sugar is a piece of fruit, it is often the best choice. Fruits like watermelon, cantaloupe, oranges, and strawberries will help satisfy a sweet tooth, and will help to fill your belly as they are low in fat. Even fruits that are higher in sugar and fat content are better for you than most kinds of candy. If you’re craving something like Skittles or Starburst, try freezing some grapes for a fun treat. They are still sweet and crunchy, and make a great to-go snack.

Trail Mix with Chocolate Chips

Trail mix is a wonderful alternative to candy if you’re craving something sweet, especially if there is dried fruit and some chocolate chips mixed in. The mixed nuts offer filling protein, while the dried fruit provides fiber and a hint of sweetness. The best part of trail mix is that it can be customized to include whatever kind of nuts, seeds, fruit, and chocolate that you like.

Whey Protein Bars in Chocolate, Caramel, or Peanut Butter

Aside from great taste, get the benefits of whey protein (it stabilizes glucose levels, and contains very little fat or carbs) - it’ll also save you from the sugar crashes and cravings that normal candy bars cause.

Smoothies To Curb Sugar Cravings

Smoothies are a great way to add fruits and vitamins into your diet. They are great sources of essential nutrients, and can also help to sneak some added benefits in without you noticing (hidden spinach, anyone?). Smoothies are a great way to nip that sugar craving in the bud, especially if you have time to make it yourself. Even a simple strawberry and banana smoothie with greek yogurt, orange juice, and some honey will go a long way to curb your craving as well as keeping you full.

Dark Chocolate

And in the event that you just can't resist a little chocolate, try to grab some dark chocolate if you can. Not only is it delicious, it is full of antioxidants and recent studies show that it has cardiovascular benefits - helping to reduce risk of heart failure. Dark chocolate is also much more likely to take care of that sugar craving, as it is more filling than milk chocolate. It can also help to reduce stress by reducing the level of stress hormones and mitigating some metabolic effects of stress.

While all these alternatives are a great way to skirt your sugar craving, there isn’t any harm in indulging within moderation. Especially since Halloween is on the way, we promise that a couple of Sour Patch Kids won’t hurt anyone!
