Steven Muller Awarded 2023's John A. McLeish Award

Steven Muller, Share Lawyers VP Ligitation, has been awarded The John A. McLeish Award for 2023!

Every year, the Ontario Trial Lawyer’s Association (OTLA) canvasses their membership to find outstanding advocates for the support of injured people in Ontario. This year, Steven Muller has been co-awarded this prestigious honour with fellow OTLA member Lawyer Richard Shekter.

“The John A. McLeish Award is given to the person, association or group that has made an outstanding contribution to the goals of a fair trial and access to justice, as an advocate, in legal scholarship, continuing legal education, legal writing, journalism, politics or government,” writes John Karapita, CEO of OTLA.

Steven’s work identifying that Bill C-22 unintended consequence is a windfall for insurers and his strategy and submissions to the Senate to amend the Bill has showcased his dedication to clients and the disability community as a whole. Additionally, he was instrumental in helping create OTLA’s Long-Term Disability section over a decade ago, providing a space for LTD litigators of all levels to learn from one another and advance access to justice.

John Karapita, CEO of OTLA wrote, “Your dedication and commitment to the profession and to OTLA is an inspiration to us all.”

Steven feels honored to receive this outstanding award. “I am very grateful to be recognized by OTLA for the John A. McLeish Award,” he explains. “We still have much work to be done to educate our Senators and Parliament of the absence of clear protections in the proposed legislation from an insurer’s abuse. The practical impact of Bill C-22 should not be that insurers can claw back this proposed benefit by way of reduction deduction or set-off provisions.”
