Chronic Fatigue Study Shows Links to Long COVID-19

Researchers at the National Institutes of Health (N.I.H.) have identified significant variations in the immune systems and other physiological functions between Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) patients and healthy individuals.

The research, published recently in the Nature Communications journal, revealed significant differences in the immune system, cardio-respiratory function, gut microbiome, and brain activity between the ME/CFS patients and a group of 21 healthy participants in the study.

Despite the small sample size, medical professionals have highlighted the value of the study as it helps substantiate that ME/CFS is a biological condition, not a psychological one.

The study's findings could also be relevant to patients with long COVID-19, as they frequently experience symptoms similar or identical to those of ME/CFS.

Pam Belluck’s "Study of Patients With a Chronic Fatigue Condition May Offer Clues to Long Covid" was published in The New York Times on February 21, 2024. Read the full New York Times article here.
