Celebrities With Long-Term Disabilities: Unexplained Pain

Celebrities are human, just like us. This post is part of our series on Celebrities with Long-Term Disabilities, with a focus on Unexplained Pain.

Montel Williams Had Unexplained Pain

Millions remember Montel Williams as the charismatic and successful host of The Montel Williams Show. What many people don’t know is that he went through ten years of misdiagnoses for his chronic pain. Williams had been living with symptoms since he was a teenager, and went for many years not knowing why he was experiencing a wide range of painful symptoms.

He was finally given an answer when he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1999.

Williams is also the author of several books, including Body Change, which outlines the exercise regimen he uses to stay strong and keep additional symptoms at bay.

Williams still experiences pain associated with his illness. "I still suffer from odd symptoms," says Williams. "I can get extreme neuralgia pain in my feet and lower extremities. It can be excruciating, and go on 24 hours a day, for months."

To cope with the pain and the slow muscle degeneration, Williams follows a strict diet and exercise regime that includes running, lifting weights, and martial arts.

"The only thing that has helped me stay alive is working out every day," Williams said. Williams is also a strong advocate for using medical marijuana to manage his symptoms, saying it helps him get through the day without having to think about his pain.

Montel Williams has personally raised money for the disease, one which affects 300,000 people in the United States and more than 1 million people around the world, according to data from the Mayo Clinic.

Williams remains positive about his battle with MS. "I want to inspire people, and show them that they can live and prosper with MS."

Bo Derek Had Unexplained Pain

Model and actress Bo Derek is well known for her role in the movie 10. But for years, she’s had to struggle with the pain resulting from a herniated disc caused by years of horseback riding.

After years of experiencing pain and being unable to find the exact source, she was able to get matched to the correct pain treatment for her condition.

Derek was so impacted by the experience that she took it upon herself to raise awareness for those suffering from chronic pain and finding help through pain management.
