3 Canadian Books About Disability, Mental Health, and Wellness
On August 9, National Book Lovers Day, we wanted to share some Canadian books about disability, mental health, and wellness.
I Overcame My Autism and All I Got Was This Lousy Anxiety Disorder: A Memoir
This book is a memoir-in-essays by Toronto-based writer, Sarah Kurchak. Sarah was diagnosed with autism at the age of twenty-seven, but she also struggled with depression and anxiety largely caused by pretending to fit in.
"This book is extraordinary. It's so rare to read a memoir where an author — autistic or not — is able to so thoroughly share the intricacies of their internal experiences, and Sarah Kurchak manages to do it in a way that's relatable, empathetic, and delightfully funny." - Goodreads review
One Good Reason
A memoir by famous musician and performer Séan McCann, the novel looks at addiction, abuse, and recovery.
"Séan has spent most of his life on a stage performing in front of thousands of people, I would have to believe that it takes a whole different type of courage to write down for the whole world to learn of the sexual abuse he was victim to." - Goodreads review
The Ghost Garden: Inside the Lives of Schizophrenia's Feared and Forgotten
The author Susan Doherty spends time in Montreal's Douglas Institute getting to know and sharing insights from different individuals struggling with mental health and psychiatric illnesses. We see rare insights into people's minds, with less judgment than typically seen or read.
"I learned much about the terrible disease of schizophrenia but never felt I was being lectured to. I became engrossed in the story of everyday people that were placed in terrible circumstances and couldn't put the book down because I cared so much about them." - Goodreads review
