The Best Pies in Canada

We asked on Facebook and you told us – pie is an absolute favourite dessert, country-wide. A slice (or two!) of pie is one of life’s greatest pleasures. But as dessert connoisseurs know, not all pie is created equal. There’s pretty good pie, and then there’s melt-in-your-mouth, this is the best thing I’ve ever tasted pie. A flakey crust, decadent filling, and a little pinch of homemade love are what make all the difference. And thankfully, there is no shortage of talented bakers and pie-makers across Canada.

Here is our list of the best pies in Canadian cities that are guaranteed to satisfy every craving.

Barrie

Fox’s Bakery & Deli

Operating since 1978, Fox’s Bakery & Deli is a Barrie institution. A family-run business named after the original “bakery master,” Erma Fox, this is the spot for traditional pies that will remind you of the ones your grandma used to make.

Brampton

Apple Factory

Less than a half-hour drive from Toronto Pearson Airport, the Apple Factory in Brampton is a go-to stop for both locals and visitors. With a commitment to quality, you simply can’t go wrong with their selection of over a dozen different pies, including sugar-free options.

Calgary

Pie Junkie

With four locations across Calgary, Pie Junkie has made it incredibly convenient to get your pie fix. Handmade every day, the all-butter pastry crust alone is enough to write home about.

Simple Simon Pies

A staple at Calgary farmer’s markets, Simple Simon Pies sells both savoury and sweet options. Started by well-known Calgarian Bob Whitworth, this community-focused company is one you can feel good about supporting.

Halifax

Heppy's Pie

Proudly French Acadian, Heppy’s in Halifax is the best spot for rustic, traditional savoury pies. And on a particularly blustery day on the East Coast, there’s nothing better than heating up a cozy pie.

Toronto

New Pie Co.

Just on the outskirts of Toronto neighbourhood Liberty Village, New Pie Co. offers up a rotation of delectable showstoppers. From the classics like Banana Cream to unexpected flavours like Coconut Butter Mochi, owner Shiela Labao knows what’s up.

Wanda’s Pie in the Sky

In the heart of Toronto’s famous Kensington Market, Wanda’s Pie in the Sky is an old faithful for dessert lovers. Selling upwards of 2500 pies every Thanksgiving, grabbing a slice at this downtown gem is always the right decision.

Hamilton

Mikey’s Cream Pies

A relatively new kid on the block, Mikey’s Cream Pies in Hamilton has become a fast favourite. Classic techniques and locally-sourced ingredients are this bakery’s recipe for success.

Kingston

Bread and Butter

A 10-minute drive from Queen’s University, Kingston’s Bread and Butter is a tasty mainstay in the community. Owned and operated by Wendy Whittall, she has been whipping up both traditional and vegan pies since 1998.

London

Fancy Tarts Bakery

With a devotion to butter, Fancy Tarts Bakery in London is the home of some of the flakiest pies in Southwestern Ontario. Whether you enjoy a Lemon Meringue, a Coconut Cream, or everything in between, there’s a pie for every taste.

Markham

T&T Bakery

Easily accessible off Highway 7 in Markham, T&T Bakery is a homey restaurant to grab a comforting bite to eat. But if you take a closer peek at their Instagram, it’s obvious that their assortment of pies is the main attraction.

Mississauga

Le Delice Pastry Shop

The largest city in the Greater Toronto Area, Mississauga has become a destination for GTA foodies. French-inspired, Le Delice Pastry Shop first opened its doors in 1988 and has been dishing out mouth-watering desserts ever since.

Oakville

Aveiro Bakery

Oakville is known for its beautiful waterfront and Aveiro Bakery is known for its authentic Portuguese baking. While you might not think of pies as a Portuguese treat, their cherry, blueberry, and apple options don’t disappoint.

Oshawa

Pie Mon

One of the few savoury-only pie shops on our list, we couldn’t leave out Pie Mon in Oshawa. Using traditional Jamaican ingredients like oxtail and jerk chicken, these pies are the dinner solution you’ve been waiting for. And if you’re in the Greater Toronto Area, they deliver!

Ottawa

Three Tarts

Located in Canada’s capital city, Three Tarts in Ottawa is an Ontario treasure. Equal parts aesthetic and flavourful, their pies are the perfect centrepiece for any celebration or holiday.

Regina

Baba’s Dough Box

At the corner of Victoria Avenue and Park Street in Regina, Baba’s Dough Box is situated in the Broders Annex neighbourhood. Trust us, you don’t want to miss their peach pie in the summer!

St. Catharine’s

Itty Bitty Pie Company

Just a hop, skip, and a jump away from the more touristy Niagara Falls, the Itty Bitty Pie Company in St. Catharines offers up both savoury and sweet, mini and full-size. With so much variety, we wouldn’t blame you if you picked up pie for dinner AND dessert!

Vaughan

Nicol’s Pastry Shop

Forty-five minutes north of central Toronto, Nicol’s Pastry Shop has been serving the Vaughan area since 1976. When award-winning pastry chef, H. Fabian, teamed up with his daughter, one of Ontario’s most beloved family bakeries was born.

Waterloo

Sweet and Savoury Pie Company

Boasting two locations in Waterloo, you can smell the Sweet and Savoury Pie Company from a mile away. Baked daily, their pies are some of the freshest, and most delicious, in town.

Windsor

Riverside Pie Cafe

Directly across from Detroit, Windsor is Ontario’s southernmost city. And on the east side of town, you’ll find the charming Riverside Pie Cafe. A tip for the indecisive: order a sampler ⸺ six different slices making up a full-size pie!

Winnipeg

Tall Grass Bakery

In business for more than 30 years, the Tall Grass Bakery in Winnipeg largely focuses on using organic and local ingredients for their pies. This bakery is so well-loved that it was even featured on Stuart McLean’s popular Vinyl Cafe series in 2006!

Vancouver

Her Majesty’s Pie Company

There’s a reason this Vancouver spot is named Her Majesty’s Pie Company ⸺ these are pies fit for royalty. Between the award-winning pastry and the local fruit, every bite is better than the last.

The Pie Shoppe

In an old bank building near the Vancouver Harbour, The Pie Shoppe is a creative hub and cherished bakery run by sisters Andrea and Stephanie French. With an inviting space and soul-warming pies, you’ll want to return time and time again.
